The record-buying public greeted Justin Guarini's album with a shrug. Ditto for "From Justin to Kelly," although that clearly wasn't his fault.

Now, the runner-up from the first season of "American Idol" is giving Broadway a shot.

Guarini will be part of the cast for "Good Vibrations," a musical featuring the songs of the Beach Boys, when it opens in New York early next year. Previews are set to begin in late December. John Carrafa, who choreographed the Tony-winning "Urinetown," is directing and choreographing the show.

"I'm up for the challenge," Guarini says of his first Broadway role. "I'm really excited. New York is definitely where I need to be at this point in my career, and the opportunity to be on Broadway is once in a lifetime."

Guarini, who has cut much of his trademark curly hair, is the second "Idol" veteran to hit Broadway in recent weeks. His fellow season one contestant, Tamyra Gray, takes a lead role in "Bombay Dreams" beginning next week.

"Good Vibrations" tells the story of a group of small-town teenagers who head for the mythical promised land of Southern California. The show features more than 30 songs from the Beach Boys.
