Getting Kinky
BRANDWEEK December 2,
2002
Flat-ironed tresses and Farrah-era feathered follicles are the current mane
obsession. The ape drape (aka mullet) has re-emerged on Prada and Gucci models,
and there seems to be no expiration date on the "fauxhawk." But Youth
Intelligence notes that a kinky cousin is on the not-too-distant hair
horizon: the Afro. Beyonce Knowles (Austin Powers in Goldmember), Samuel L.
Jackson (Shaft) and other retro movie icons have sported the big and beautiful
'70s 'do, which is now crossing over from big screen to the mainstream, and
spanning races and places. Strokes' guitarist Albert Hammond Jr. sports one, and
American Idol's Justin Guarini does, too. After 'N Sync's Justin
Timberlake trimmed his tresses, fans embarked on a "Bring back the
'fro" drive. On a recent trip to Los Angeles, Youth Intelligence observed
white high school kids going au natural, sporting self-dubbed "Jewfros,"
and accessorizing with strategically placed 'fro combs.
