Despite it’s cheesy NASCAR-esque themes and well-worn territory, if you’re bored, pick up Fast Girl for a little inspirational kick in the pants. Starring Mircea Monroe as the "Fast Girl" Alex Johnstone, whose racecar-driving father’s death left her with a thirst for vengance on the track. She’s building her own car, but can’t seem to get it to work. And oh no! The qualifying race for young, up-and-coming racecar drivers is too soon, and Alex must earn her junior racers license AND fix her car in time.

Thank God, help is on the way for this tough-as-nails self-reliant only child. She works at a diner, and her boss, played terrifically by Caroline Rhea, both stands in as a mother-type figure and confidant. Alex’s uncle also owns the racetrack that she’s vying for a spot on, but is skurred she’ll make the same mistakes as her father. Just in time for the qualifying race comes another famous team to help coach the young ’uns. Included in this mix is a famous racer, play by Justin Guarini. Guarini delivers a shockingly heterosexual performance that seriously blew me out of the water. Well, considering the LAST thing I saw him in was "From Justin to Kelly," this shouldn’t be a far reach, but given that we’ve seen so very few of him, and especially without straight locks, Guarini’s romantic lead was a refreshing and welcome pleasant surprise.

Though ’Fast Girl" is fairly predictable as a "Bend It Like Beckham" Goes to NASCAR, it’s material is welcome and doesn’t tire too easily. (Tire pun intended). Its special features include a featurette and a trailer, making this DVD a decent purchase.
